When new employees are oriented and trained, are they also exposed to and invited into the safety culture? In leading organizations, new employees are not simply taught the rules and procedures of their new jobs, but also taught how to be a productive member of the culture. They are told how this culture thinks about and addresses risks in the workplace, how they interact with each other and watch out for each other, and how they seek to continuously improve their safety performance.
New employees get the feeling they are joining a winning team, not just starting a new job. Safety cultures can be either enriched or diluted by new people entering them. Take the time to include culture in the new-employee
